Modern collaborative robots (cobots) are an important trend in industrial automation and smart manufacturing. Compared with traditional industrial robots, cobots focus on human-robot collaboration, safety, flexible automation, and adaptability. They are increasingly used in electronics assembly, medical equipment, AGV trolleys, logistics automation, and intelligent warehouse applications.
In the overall structure of a collaborative robot, the base rotation platform (J1 axis) is the core component responsible for load-bearing and rotational motion. It not only drives the entire robotic arm and payload to rotate smoothly, but also directly determines the overall stability, positioning accuracy and safety performance of the robot. Therefore, customers set extremely high comprehensive performance requirements for the motor used in the base rotation platform.
The customer of this project is a collaborative robot manufacturer focusing on 5–10 kg payload robots for automated loading and precision assembly workstations. They have strict requirements for compact structure, high torque, fast response, high safety and long service life.During the initial stage of the project, the customer faced the following key challenges in the base rotation drive system:
Difficulty in achieving high torque output at low speed:Ordinary DC motors or standard gear motors cannot simultaneously meet both low-speed and high-torque requirements.
High requirements for smooth start and stop:Any vibration or impact during start-up, acceleration, deceleration or emergency stop will directly affect safety and user experience.
Long-term reliable operation under complex working conditions
Limited installation space and high protection requirements:The interior of the base rotation platform is compact, and the working environment often contains dust and oil mist. The motor must have a high protection level and allow structural customization.
Wide voltage adaptability:Different robot models of the customer use 24V, 48V, 110V and 220V DC power supply systems. The motor must support a wide DC voltage range.
Based on the above challenges, we provided a customized 90mm gear motor solution for the collaborative robot base rotation platform. Through the integrated design of motor, high-precision gear system, optimized operating modes and enhanced protection structure, all performance requirements for the J1 axis were fully satisfied.
Core Motor Specifications: The power range is 180-600W, the working voltage is 12-220VDC, the wide voltage can be customized, the output speed is 13-750rpm, the torque is 2.8-134N.m, to meet the needs of customers to bear weight, support S1, S2, S3 working mode, and high protection level can be customized, and the compact integrated design is suitable for base rotation installation.
This parameter range fully covers the torque, speed and dynamic response requirements of 5–10 kg payload collaborative robots.
High Torque and Stable Low-speed Output: By optimizing the gear ratio, the motor operates in a high-efficiency region while achieving up to 134 N·m stable output torque on the output side. This perfectly meets the application requirements of the base rotation platform for:Low-speed constant rotation,Frequent start and stop,Forward and reverse rotation.
Multiple Duty Modes for Complex Operating Conditions: Through optimized winding design, magnetic circuit structure and thermal management, the motor maintains excellent thermal stability and reliability under various working conditions.
High Protection and Compact Structural Design: A high protection-grade structure is adopted to effectively prevent dust and oil mist.Mounting flange, shaft size and cable outlet direction are customized according to the customer’s assembly requirements, improving overall system integration efficiency.
Wide Voltage Customization Capability:To adapt to different power supply platforms of the customer’s robot models, the motor supports multiple DC voltage versions including:12V,24V,48V,110V,220V/230V.
